Understanding the System
As a person that lived in the U.S. for 36 years, I know how hard it is to adjust to living in a new country. I decided to move to Colombia almost 4 years ago. My first 2 years in Colombia were full of challenges, standing in lines at many government buildings, and lots of misinformation. Just as in other countries there plenty of good professionals, but it’s just a matter of finding them. Many people just are not familiar with doing business with foreigners, and don’t know how their company policies may apply to you, the foreigner. Then on the other hand there are the people you really want to avoid that are just trying to gouge you for every penny they can.

Doing Business in Colombia
It took me a while to get a good list of people I could count on for myself, and for business. You will always find it challenging when moving to a new city and settling in. Just a list of a few things that come to mind that were difficult for me where lawyers, drivers license, visas, health insurance policy, doctors, dentists, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, printers, graphic artists, notary public, etc. I had to search a long time to get a good team of professionals that I could work with, and rely upon.
As a foreigner that didn’t speak any Spanish when I arrived I waited a year or more in some cases to get the right information. It was difficult in many cases waiting around to find someone who actually knew what they are talking about. Many people just aren’t I can’t tell you how many times various people gave me bad information. In this country there are a lot of misinformed employees.
In this time I learned how hard and frustrating
it was to figure out new I understand how important and frustrating
it can be adjusting to the ways things are done in another country.
